U.S. Targhee Sheep Association Announces 2027 Youth Starter Flock Program
The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association (USTSA) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2027 USTSA Starter Flock Program. Designed to foster youth leadership, promote agricultural education, and expand the visibility of registered Targhee sheep, the program provides an aspiring young producer with foundational genetics and dedicated mentorship to launch their own registered flock.
Program Details & Award Package
The selected recipient will be awarded a starter flock of three (3) registered Targhee ewes, including at least one ewe lamb generously donated by active USTSA members. All awarded animals will meet strict association standards, including official registration, a fleece side micron under 24.94, and a QR scrapie codon 171 genotype.
In addition to the animals, the winning applicant will receive:
● A Minimum $500 Buyer Credit donated by the USTSA for purchasing additional sheep at the 2027 USTSA National Show & Sale.
● One-on-One Mentorship from an experienced USTSA member to assist with flock management, breeding, and exhibition guidance.
The award will be presented during the 2027 USTSA National Show and Sale, held July 15–17, 2027, in Manti, Utah. Recipients must attend the National Show and Sale and are also eligible and encouraged to participate in the National Junior Showmanship Competition.
Eligibility Requirements
● Applicants must be youth ages 10 to 15 as of January 1, 2027.
● Applicants’ immediate families must not currently raise registered Targhee sheep.
● Applicants must have access to appropriate facilities, demonstrate basic care capabilities, and submit a letter of recommendation from a 4-H leader, FFA advisor, or livestock mentor.
