Re-enrollment Reminder: 4-H Membership Matters

Re-enrollment season often brings questions: Should we re-enroll? Is it worth it for our family? The answer is simple—yes. 4-H is a youth development program rooted in education, leadership, and community. It offers unique, hands-on learning experiences that are only available to enrolled members.

If your child is participating in 4-H programming—whether it’s the Dog Project, Horse Project, or any other county-led activity—they must be officially enrolled in 4-H. Participation without enrollment is not permitted. This is not a matter of preference—it is a matter of policy.

According to Wisconsin 4-H guidelines, there are only two ways to engage with 4-H:

  1. As an enrolled 4-H member, eligible for all programming, competitions, and recognition.
  2. As a participant in a special interest program directly sponsored by the UW-Madison Division of Extension.

Youth who are not enrolled in 4-H cannot participate in 4-H projects, meetings, or events. This includes county fair exhibitions under the 4-H name.

Project leaders and volunteers are expected to uphold these standards. If you are unsure whether a youth is properly enrolled, please contact the county 4-H Program Educator. Attendance at 4-H meetings and events should be documented and shared with the county office to ensure compliance.

Re-enrollment is not just a formality—it is a commitment to the values and structure that make 4-H a trusted educational program. Let’s ensure that every youth who benefits from 4-H is doing so as a member in good standing.
