On Saturday, September 6, three youth from Trempealeau County showcased their skills at the 38th Annual Wisconsin State 4-H Gymkhana Show, held at State Fair Park in West Allis. Representing the county were Katelyn Hogden (Ettrick), Madison Grotjahn (Arcadia), and Catherine Kampa (Independence), along with their equine partners Rambo, Reno, and Jazzy, respectively.
A Gymkhana Show features a variety of fast-paced, timed events such as Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, the Flag Race, LT Special, Plug, and Keyhole. Competitors race against others in their age or grade division, with the fastest time earning the win. Precision is just as important as speed—knocking over a barrel or pole results in a five-second penalty.
These events are the culmination of months—and sometimes years—of hard work and dedication. Exhibitors work closely with their horses to build trust, sharpen skills, and prepare for competition. All of that effort paid off, as each Trempealeau County rider earned multiple Top Ten finishes in their classes: Kampa placed in five events, Grotjahn in four, and Hogden in three. Notably, Hogden and her horse Rambo earned Reserve Champion in Pole Bending in their age group.
The Trempealeau County 4-H Horse Project continues to be an active and passionate group. Youth in the program compete locally at the county fair each July and participate in a summer series of Gymkhana Shows held every other Tuesday night at the Galesville fairgrounds. These events also serve as fundraisers for the horse project.
